OS X 10.4.5: Finder plays nicely in its Space

June 30, 2008 – 6:56 pm

I think it’s about time Apple fixed this one.  Hidden in the OS X 10.4.5 feature page is this little gem:

Addresses an issue in which switching from a space with a Finder window keeps the Finder as the active application instead of the application residing in the destination space.

Has this been bugging anyone else for the last 5 versions of the OS?  I’m not certain how other people code, but when I’m on a single monitor, I have one Space for Terminal windows, one Space for each browser, and one space for TextMate.  I also constrain Finder to a single Space so I don’t wind up with a bazillion Finder windows all over the place.  The result is that I switch Spaces a lot, but I always know where everything’s living.  So I wind up with something like this:

This (used to) require clicking (or in some way activating) the application in the recently switched-to space if the LAST space accessed was Finder (in my case, Space 1).  Now, after lo these many months, the Finder behaves like any other application.  Thank you Apple.

  2. How is it that I never thought of assigning Finder to a space? Get thee to Space 6!

I don’t know if it will make a difference for me on my design machine at home, since I like to open Finder windows near the apps they relate to. But on my laptop for work, I think this “discovery” and the fix will make me very happy.
